πΊοΈ Disability Benefits by State
Federal SSDI and SSI work the same everywhere β but three things vary by state: whether your state expanded Medicaid, whether it pays a state supplement on top of SSI, and whether it has a state disability or paid-medical-leave program for shorter-term wage replacement. Find yours below.
Find your state's disability agencies (the 6 doors that matter)
Six state-level offices control most of what SCI life depends on β waiver attendant care, vocational rehab, free advocacy, independent-living help. Each national locator finds your state's office:
- Medicaid agency & HCBS waivers (attendant care, equipment, home mods): Medicaid.gov state contacts β ask specifically about "HCBS waiver programs for physical disabilities" and waitlists.
- Vocational Rehabilitation (job training, college funding, work tech): RSA state VR directory.
- Centers for Independent Living (free peer-run help with benefits, housing, PCA hiring): ACL CIL finder.
- Protection & Advocacy (free legal help for disability-rights, benefits, and abuse issues): NDRN member directory.
- Aging & Disability Resource Centers / "No Wrong Door" (the catch-all front door): dial 2-1-1 or see USAGov disability services.
- State SCI/TBI trust funds (about a dozen states fund equipment/services from traffic fines): ask your CIL or rehab social worker "does this state have a spinal cord injury trust fund?"
The Reeve Foundation also maintains state-by-state resource sheets β ask their free information line for your state's.
How to apply — in any state
- SSDI & SSI (federal, same everywhere): apply at ssa.gov/apply or call 1-800-772-1213. See our applying & appeals guide.
- Medicaid: apply through your state Medicaid agency or HealthCare.gov. In expansion states many people qualify on income alone.
- State disability / paid leave (if your state has one): apply through that state program, usually via the state labor or employment department.
- Free help: a WIPA benefits counselor (Work Incentives Planning & Assistance), your local Center for Independent Living or Aging & Disability Resource Center, or dial 2-1-1.
